1948 - Birth in Perkata / Hungary
Secondary education at the Pécs Fine Arts High School. First exhibitions.
1972 - After two years in Budapest, Kamill Major left his country for good and moved to Paris.
Upon arrival, he attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, from which he graduated in 1978.
1978 - Publication of his first artist's book,
Le Livre des Morts (The Book of the Dead)
in 55 copies. Well beyond the means of publishing multiples, screen printing quickly became for Major a tool of artistic creation in its own right. Freed from the constraints imposed by conventional uses, it proved to
be inventive and it gave birth to specific works.
1981 - Kamill Major became professor of Visual Arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs / Paris.
1976-91 - AKKAD
Work on weft and writing occupied the centre of his creation with very large canvases and reliefs.
Publication of two portfolios:
- Appels (Calls) 1980 - Images by Kamill Major, texts by Vera Székely and music by Laszlo Vidovszky, a series of images leading from the black square to the white page through the emergence and the disintegration of a grid.
- Gilgamesh 1982 - Tribute to the magnificent Akkado-Sumerian epic.
1984 - In New York, Major was struck by the vandalized walls, the scratched and torn posters, a kind of writing rhythmed by a deep revolt ; the strength of this spontaneous expression fascinated him and introduced into his creation giving birth to palimpsests: the wise and serene archaic writing was suddenly brutally covered by contemporary signs.
1988 - TORN PAPERS
Fascinated by the irises in his garden that each year emerge from the ground with the same formidable energy, Major tried to express the beauty of nature's creative violence. In turn he attacks his works of paper, tears, crumples, washes and erodes them.
1991-1999 - BODY PRINTING
These creations on fabric are reminiscent of the Shroud of Turin, where the haunting question of the meaning of existence and the impermanence of the material is found.
2000 - HYBRIDS
Major settled in the Gard region in France. Leaving his Parisian studio, he tore up most of his photos of the deceased. Suddenly challenged by the fragments on the ground, he decided to bring them back to life in the form of mysterious and grotesque HYBRIDS. Life after life...
2005 - Publication of the book Ici Repose, Kamill Major, Raday Könyvesház Publishing, Budapest. With a preface by László Földényi and Gislind Nabakowski, it presents fifty-four photos of cemetery medallions made by the artist between 1975 and 2005.
2006-2014 - Major resumed his work on writing. Production of monumental canvases and reliefs on wood.
2010-2020 - PALMYRA and RYTHMS (Reliefs on wood)
A trip to Syria, the incredible beauty of the sites, especially Palmyra and the desert, enriched his work with the addition of new colours.

as they catch us off guard.
But we have to be careful, Kamill Major's singular warnings allude to our own human condition:
are we worthy of life, worthy of our death, responsible for our eternity? Nothing less.

2020 to now - RAGS
Is it due to recent lockdowns and to the loss of some freedoms? The theme of grids and weft is now coming back. Yet with poetry and gentleness hitherto unknown.
1948 - Naissance à Perkata
Études secondaires au lycée des Beaux-Arts de Pécs. Premières expositions.
1972 - Après deux années passées à Budapest, Kamill Major quitte définitivement son pays pour s´installer à Paris. Dès son arrivée, il fréquente l´École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs dont il obtient le diplôme en 1978.
1978 - Il édite en sérigraphie son premier livre d´artiste Le Livre des Morts en 55 exemplaires. Mais, bien au-delà du moyen d´éditer des multiples, la sérigraphie devient rapidement pour lui un outil de création artistique à part entière. Elle se libère des contraintes imposées par les usages conventionnels, se révèle inventive et donne naissance à des œuvres spécifiques.
1981 - Major devient professeur d´Arts Plastiques à l´École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs / Paris.
1976-91 - GILGAMESH - AKKAD
Le travail sur la trame et l´écriture occupe le centre de sa création avec la réalisation de toiles et de reliefs de très grands formats.
Édition de deux portefolios :
- Appels 1980 - Images de Kamill Major, textes de Vera Székely et musique de Laszlo Vidovszky , série d´images menant du carré noir à la page blanche à travers l'apparition puis la désintégration d'une trame
- Gilgamesh 1982 - Hommage à la magnifique épopée akkado-sumérienne
1984 - A New York, Major est frappé par les murs vandalisés, les affiches grattées, lacérées, écriture rythmée d´une profonde révolte; la force de cette expression spontanée le fascine et s´introduit dans sa création donnant naissance à des palimpsestes : l´écriture archaïque sage et sereine est subitement recouverte avec brutalité par des signes contemporains.
1988 - LES PAPIERS DÉCHIRÉS, technique mixte
Fasciné par les iris de son jardin qui chaque année émergent du sol avec la même énergie redoutable, Major tente d´exprimer la beauté de la violence créatrice de la nature en s´attaquant à ses œuvres de papier qu´il déchire, froisse, lave, érode.
1991-1999 - EMPREINTES, toiles
Ces empreintes de corps sur tissus ne sont pas sans rappeler celle du linceul de Turin ; s´y retrouve l´obsédante question du sens de l´existence
et de l´impermanence de la matière.
2000 - HYBRIDES, collages
Kamill Major s´installe dans le Gard.
En quittant son atelier parisien, il déchire la plupart de ses photos de défunts. Soudain interpelé par les fragments à terre, il décide de leur redonner vie sous forme d´hybrides mystérieux et grotesques. La vie après la vie...
2005 - Publication du livre Ici Repose, Kamill Major, Editions Raday Könyvesház, Budapest
Préfacé par László Földényi et Gislind Nabakowski, celui-ci présente cinquante-quatre photos de médaillons de cimetières réalisées par l´artiste entre 1975 et 2005.
2006-2014 - Reprise du travail sur l´écriture. Réalisation de toiles monumentales et de reliefs sur bois.
2010-2020 – PALMYRE et RYTHMES, reliefs sur bois
Un voyage en Syrie, l’incroyable beauté des sites et notamment de Palmyre et du désert enrichissent son travail avec l’apport de nouvelles couleurs.
"Nous sommes à chaque instant avisés par des signes ou des messages venus de très loin que nous ne savons pas retenir tant ils nous prennent au dépourvu. Or il faut bien y prendre garde, ceux de Kamill Major sont de singuliers avertissements car c´est à notre propre condition humaine qu´ils font allusion : sommes-nous dignes de la vie, dignes de notre mort, responsables de notre éternité ? Rien moins. Il me semble en effet que cela vaut la peine d´y regarder de près et de prendre du recul."

2020 – LES CHIFFONS, toiles
Est-ce la conséquence des récents confinements et de la perte d’un certain nombre de nos libertés ? Le thème des grillages et des trames revient, mais avec une douceur et une poésie jusqu’alors inconnues. La couleur aussi est très présente.
